Shani Mahiri King & Bobby C. Martin Jr.

Summary: This gorgeous new release is a testament to how beautiful typography can influence a book’s design.

A combination of bright colors, silhouettes, and names decorate the pages inviting the reader to take it all in. The text is magnificent, and I love the design choice of having a wide variety of colors throughout the book. The text meanders around the page, taking the reader on a physical journey on the page and throughout history while speaking directly to them.

This book is bold and celebratory. In the back is extensive information about those quoted in the beginning pages. Each name mentioned in the back (after a note from Shani) has a quote from the individual before the biographical information. In short, there is a plethora of historical knowledge in between these bright purple covers. It could be used and studied all year long, and it absolutely should be! Absolutely required reading in middle school classrooms, I can’t wait to return to it again and again.

This book is published by Tilbury House, and was sent to me by PubSpotlight. All opinions are my own!

Lemon Chia Seed Pound Cake:

Cake Ingredients:

12T butter

1c sugar (I use maple)

1T lemon extract (if you want things more sour, split the amount between extract and juice)

3 eggs

1/4c + 2T milk

2c flour

1t baking powder

pinch of salt

3-4T chia seeds (to your taste)

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350. Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add in extract and/or lemon juice and eggs one at a time, beating completely between each addition. Add in milk. Add in dries. Fold in seeds, put into greased pan, and bake until a tester comes out clean in the center. This takes about an hour for a loaf pan.

For a glaze: I use powdered sugar, lemon extract, and a bit of milk to make a glaze in the desired consistency. If I’m using a shaped loaf pan, I use a thinner glaze. If it’s a plain shaped loaf of a Bundt, I use a thicker glaze to get more heavily defined lines.
