Raising A Legacy: Hi, my name is Mrs. Brooks.  I have four children that I homeschool, and they are the inspiration behind what I do.  Last year, I created Raising A Legacy.  Raising A Legacy’s mission is to change with the world with education and create a society built on inclusivity.

I design educational holiday themed craft boxes for children.  They are based on holidays, so children will have the opportunity to learn about and grow appreciation for holidays they normally wouldn’t be exposed to.  As well as, for those children who don’t celebrate mainstream holidays they will have something personalized for them.

TTA: What are you passionate about?Screen Shot 2019-06-15 at 8.33.50 AM

RAL: I am passionate about promoting culture awareness and inclusivity in children.  There is research that shows that children develop racial biases and prejudices at a young age.  I believe by teaching holidays they are able to learn about and see similarities between different cultures and their own in a fun way.  I believe this teaches empathy which in turn can create advocates for change.  I am also passionate about education.  We know a lot about how children learn, but it is not often done in practice.  In addition, best practice is not always accessible to every child equally.  My goal is to work on closing those gaps.

TTA: Tell us about a project you’re currently working on!

RAL: Currently, I am working on adding more holidays to the craft box selection.  I plan to have a box for every holiday, AND every way that it is celebrated.  This is important, because many holidays are celebrated in multiple ways.  For example, Christmas can be celebrated religiously, culturally, or a combination of both.  I am also working on adding more educational resources to the website.  In the coming year, it will have a ton of information and crafts about each holiday, and include free printables for activities and science experiments.

TTA: How can people support you on your journey?

TTA: What book was your favorite in 2018?

RAL: My favorite book of 2018 was Becoming.  I love reading about strong women, in hopes that maybe some of their strength will rub off on me.  I also had the opportunity to attend the book tour, which was an amazing experience.

TTA: What are you looking forward to in the coming year?

RAL: I am looking forward to continuing to grow personally and professionally.

Thank you for letting me share my story.  I appreciate everything you are doing.
