This book is really interesting in that the book’s Artist (Louise McNaught) is featured before the book begins. Next, there is a foreword from Tusk, a charity organization that champions for endangered wildlife. This book is stunning. Twenty endangered animals are featured in this large coffee table sized book. On one side of the page is a huge portrait of the animal, painted by McNaught. The opposite side of the page has geographical information about the animals, as well as two paragraphs about the animal. The animal portraits are beautiful, and have unique upward-drips of paint creating a stunning artistic effect. The information about the animals is easy to understand, and the setup of the book allows for random pages to be read during a perusal of pages rather than requiring a strict beginning to end read. Colorful backgrounds and painted maps are very enticing to a wide variety of ages. What is most important however, is the message behind the book. We live in a world where climate change is very real, and it threatens the existence of all species living on our planet. This book also includes information about the history of animal conservation, and what the average person can do to assist in alleviating this growing crisis. This is an amazingly beautiful book, with an even more beautiful message behind it. This book is comprised of poems telling the stories of 11 enslaved people. Records of these individuals were found in a historical document owned by the author himself, who developed free verse poetry and personal details of the people who were merely listed with their price on a document. In Athelia’s poem, the last stanza reads “As slaves, we do what our owners expect and demand of us. As human beings, our real lives are our precious secret.” Bryan brings to life the harsh realities of enslaved life in a way that humanizes and reveals the multi-faceted nature of these enslaved peoples. After a poem that corresponds with each of the people: Peggy, John, Athelia, Betty, Qush, Jane, Stephen, Mulvina, Bacus, Charlotte & Dora; another poem tells of their dreams. While their real jobs and dreams are unaccounted for in written historical documents, they are probably not far off from the dreams of many of the millions of enslaved peoples throughout the history of the United States. America is a country that was founded with and built on the backs of enslaved people. These poems are beautiful, and have even more beautiful illustrations paired with them. Bryan does a fantastic job memorializing these 11 people that history all but forgot. We particularly love the colorful illustration of Bacus’ dreams, showing him blacksmithing and singing a song of freedom. We got the chance to have a sneak peek at a new book from profiling some activists of the Baha’i faith, which is actually still doing a Kickstarter campaign until Wednesday! We’re always interested in books that specifically uplift activists, and this look through history was really educational for us. Little Champions of Justice features 8 people who stood up to injustice and raised their voices for equity and fair treatment for both themselves and others. We got the chance to read about Tahirih, who lived in Iran and hid behind a curtain in order to go to school secretly. There is also a story about an apartheid activist named Nhlumba Bertha Mkhize. This book is great for a variety of audiences because it’s not an overtly religious text, and instead focuses on the activism the individuals threw themselves into and how they affected great change throughout history. 📚 When we first read the stories, we didn’t know anything about what followers of Baha’i believed, so we checked out this article From Wikipedia: The Baháʼí Faith (Persian: ‫بهائی‬‎ Bahāʼi), or Bahaʼism, is a religion teaching the essential worth of all religions, and the unity and equality of all people. Established by Baháʼu'lláh in 1863, it initially grew in Persia and parts of the Middle East, where it has faced ongoing persecution since its inception. It is estimated to have between 5 and 8 million adherents, known as Baháʼís, spread throughout most of the world's countries and territories. Although we were sent this PDF by the publishers, @firstvalleybooks, it was up to our discretion whether or not to review, and all opinions are our own! You can check out their Kickstarter link in our bio! . #weneeddiversebooks #diversekidlit #picturebooks #childrensbooks #comingsoon #kickstarter #diversebooks #diversebooksforkids #picturebooksaremyjam #bahai #bahaifaith #bookstagram #education #diversity #inclusion
Arturo Schomburg is a man that deserves to be immortalized, and this book is a fantastic way to open the doors to knowledge for young readers. This book is hefty! It is crammed with information about Arturo Schomburg himself, as well as biographies of some individuals that he gathered books about. Schomburg was fascinated with Black stories, gathering tales of “his history” to share with the world. This is an incredibly detailed and well-researched book, it has a plethora of very specific information such as names and dates. These would be confusing to a very young reader, it’s a lot to keep track of. However the story can easily be vocally edited to match the listener’s comprehension level, and has fantastic vocabulary. This is an amazing book about a scholar that changed the world by collecting stories of histories erased maliciously. Arturo Schomburg went on to curate the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, still open and changing lives today. We highly recommend this book! This is an AWESOME graphic novel! Something we like about it very much is that while it very closely follows the life of the one and only powerhouse Ruth Bader Ginsburg, it also gives an amazing amount of historical context and vocabulary for the reader. We begin the book with Ruth’s birth and follow her trailblazing journey beyond her appointment to the Supreme Court of the United States. It was really cool to see Ruth grow up and be unafraid to be seen as smart, capable, and driven the entire time. The graphic novel was thorough and well-researched. We learned so much! Challenging sexism and higher education, RBG saw firsthand the tides of change. In fact, she was often the one strategizing. Undoubtedly, Ruth has inspired generations of young people already. This book is the next iteration, having a graphic novel about historical figures is really neat and brings a new dimension of learning into the equation.
